Presents

Yesterday I took a lunch break over at nickelodeon where Katie works her day job. (she's doing all kinds of creative stuff for a new show that hasn't come out yet)

So, I did this marker sketch for her, now displayed in her cubicle (L)! On the far right is an old drawing I did on a napkin while we waited for the tow truck to come save us. (long story) Katie did the middle one of her and Luke. Katie's hairstyle reminds me of cute puppy ears.

Here's a quick Coral Cafe sketch of friends: Mike Fontanelli (one of the original R&S geniuses, too smart not to have a blog!) and Steve Worth Mike won the coin toss and got to keep it. I'll do another one for you, Steve! But I have urges to give you phantom freckles, if thats okay by you?

Here's a gift for animator friend, David I think he is secretly mad that I gave him bitch-tits. (sorry! he doesnt really have them)

Thanks again for coming to see me at the Comic con!

haha awesome marlo! i really like that your caricatures have a real hirschfeld feel to them! that's hard to pull off!

i'm also pretty glad that you link to my friend pete as "mustache" [i being "the other mustache guy" as it were]

so you don't get lost in the fray, here's some of pete's pics starring you!

ALSO! at the con i asked you about prismacolors and you told me about some kind of marker that blows them out of the water...any recollection as to what marker that was?

Hmmm... what are those DVDs, seen in the top photo, I wonder?

hey marlo!

what kinda markers do you do for your awesome marker sketches?

we got some drawings, and we'll let you know when we got 'em up : )

Marker questions:

okay, I use a lot of marker brands, prisma color is retarded though.... i mean if you want a flat color it's all streaky and horrible. Chartpaks are best for flesh and flat color. But for line, you can go as cheap as crayola marker. As long as the tip pleases you.

You see AL's influence?
thats funny, al hirschfeld was my first official beloved artist. I used to just copy his exact style when i was young. But now i don't see his influence at all in my work??

I did indeed post the artwork you graciously drew for me, you wicked, wicked drawer...

I can also see something of Hirschfeld in your work... perhaps it's not an direct influence, but there's some particular Hirschfeldian quality that's hard to describe. Perhaps, because your caricatures have great inner rhythm and dynamics, and also very clean lines without anything superfluous. It's hard to achieve even one of these qualities, yet you hit them all in almost every drawing. I'm truly impressed.

I just discovered your blog, and there is some fantastic stuff here.
Amazingly fluid work. I will now patiently scour this very blog for
inspiration and talent by osmosis.

Seriously, great work.
Color me inspired.

awesome!!! thanks for the marker tip [no pun intended...] if i'm not animating i usually just ink with a brush, so i'm pretty retarded when it comes to coloring.

and the hirschfeld? i always liked him too, my sister's name is nina, and we'd always look for where he snuk his daughter's name into his work. it's definitely not like i see your stuff and say "pfft, that girl looks like she's trying to draw like al," it's more like there's that really vibrant hirschfeld spirit of totally wacky lines that somehow all work to make up a caricature that looks more like a person then a photo would. it's pretty awesome!

Hey Marlo, thanks for linking my pictures! Sorry I uploaded some new photos so the new default photo set is full of that weird japanese cartoon guy on the sign.

Once again, it was splendid to meet you ladies! Thanks for the marker tips too, I have a love/hate relationship with prismacolors. They just (maybe within a year or two?) changed the narrow tip on the double ended pens. I like it better now, more of a marker narrow tip than the metal/felt tip similar to sharpie narrow points. Useless marker trivia abound... heh later!

Well, I think you are even better than hirschfeld, there's more fun in your drawings. Of course you have the whole beautiful girl thing goin' on too. I'd slam both of you though, I'm a lonley fucker.

Hey Marlo, thanks for taking my blog comments cherry. Hope you can make it up to S.F. someday. I wanna see how you do that crazy marker stuff up close.

Shawn Dickinson said...

Marlo, you leave the craziest comments on my blog. But you know, if my dad and your mom had sex, the kid would look just like a cross between me and you! Then everyone would look at that crazy child and think that me and you had sex. Then the kid would probably go take a piss behind Taco Bell (naked of course).

Your drawings are amazing! You remind me a bit of Ralhp Steadman.

If you work in the animation field then I urge to get out. Your drawings are too good for it. No animated show would capture the spirit of your drawings. Become an illustrator instead, so one can pore over your drawings at their leisure.

Oops, I meant Ralph Steadman.

Am I famous?! Am I. . .pfft. .do you have any idea who I am????

Sadly, I'm not famous at all.

But if it would make you feel better, I can commit some sort of crime during prime time, local news.

PS: I hope that's a nose you're drawing on your sketchblog banner.
PPS: I couldn't post this on MySpace because I'm not your friend. And that makes me sad inside.
