2 treats, if you like

This is my dear confidant, Emily Anthony. We think I got her likeness. She's difficult if just size-contrast is considered... most people only caricature size differences. (nothing about her is very big or small) Caricaturing texture or shapes that represent awkwardly/stupider make for a funnier likeness of someone who lacks a small or huge feature.

They're pretty cool- it'd be good to see the original subjects. This sort of ties in with my blog's only post (Go read it!)- I guess some people really are difficult to caricature.

Marlo - I really enjoy viewing your work. You convey that you're having fun when you draw, and that's incredibly appealing. With regard to your post, appreciating a drawing with a good likeness requires a familiarity with its subject; appreciating a good drawing can be done without any such reference. Your drawings work on one level all the time because they're just great drawings with lively lines, with features pushed to the extreme. There's added dimension to your self-portraits or drawings of your pal, Kali, because readers of the blog have seen photos of both of you and that's where likeness factors in. I don't recall seeing Emily Anthony, so am not sure if you achieved what you set out to in terms of likeness playing with textures or shapes.

AAAAAgh!!! This IS what I would look like if I was nasty-ugly. And had a greasy break-out on my forehead. This caricature was born out of my dislike for a too-short haircut...

If anybody wants to see a photo of me for comparison, you can look at my blog (july 4th has a photo of me) or website (about me)
but this drawing--which she cackled over incessantly while creating it-- is proof that a master can take an ordinary face and make it grotesque even when it's not--and even then, the grotesqueness is made beautiful by its colors and textures.

Love you too, Marlo!!

Ah, yes. Cruelly funny and accurate, in the best pre-watered down Scarfian way possible. Good stuff. Makes me wish I was part of your circle and letting loose without the constraints of commercial considerations.

Marlo said...

Hi jeff! why did they get rid of cracked? did they just replace it with MAD kids?

LĂȘA Holubii said...

beaoooooooooooootiful!
ok, no more words...

Jeff Wong said...

When I was regularly contributing to CRACKED (the poor man's MAD), it was owned by a Canadian family that also owned a wedding mag and maybe some other imprints. The publisher, who was into comics, eventually ended up selling CRACKED to some guy in Florida and it has since changed hands (and is now in its present incarnation with a sort of Maxim/FHM vibe).

That man's face texture looks so...life like- oh my!

Those zits look pretty ripe I think they're ready to be...

YOU WIN!

Nico said...

Marlo- I encourage you to still write about the drawings you post. It's nice to hear some background behind the art by the artist. It also helps that you're funny. I like the noises that come out of your face!

Ryan Kramer said...

haha, man...you are soo talented. Great expression on the first one.
You should talk MORE about your drawings so we can understand your genious better! :)

Katie said...

I only just noticed how beautifully and lovingly rendered that guy's philtrum is...woo!

Chris L said...

Great advice as always. I always have trouble with "average faces." This helps a lot.

Oh and the future guy looks like Plastic Man!

Whoa, you can't stop surprizing me with the awesome quality and hilarious-ness (if that's a word) of your work. That linework and colors... I die!

Mick said...

brilliant first one there... your mind is truly in tune with some kind of highly evolved backwards goof ball instinct. yeah the writing does spoil the mythical hue around you... writing makes you seem normal and no fecker wants normal

i dig 'em. Cheers for the hair comment. I used to have the most luciously large red dome (ass length at one point). It dulled, got short and straight. woe is me.

Keep the Big Red alive!!!

P.s. the hair wasn't as long as my ass...it reached it in length. I'm feeling dirty for mentioning my ass twice (3) times. Stay cool and I'm constantly inspired by your pics.

i think "delightfully creepy" sums it up well! awesome as always!!!

The caricature theory/description was really cool. That's great advice for one of the problems that plague probably every caricature artist. I'd love it too to hear more about your approach. I really like the lighting too you chose to show off the textures. The cheeks, nose, and zits just come off as so specific - effecting the way the eye reads the subject, as I'm sure it does on the actual person's facial structure.

LOVE the way you use these markers!

Hahahaha!!Your work RULES!!!

cheers!

Oooooh, love the guy from the FUTURE! Your caricature of your friend Emily, I love also, but I'd like to see a photo of her for reference. And you use markers to color these, right?

Wow, the colors used on the drawing at the top are amazing. I actually feel the urge to pop those two huge pulsating zits on her forehead.

The first one was funny looking (in a good way) but the second one kinda creeped me out.

Oh, also, I had recently posted my Iwerks tribute on my blog, and if you have the time, could you read it and tell me if I had left anything out?

Thanks.

David Reyes said...

yeah your right most people only focus on (size contrast) when doing caricatures. but yeah theres so many elements like personality, color, etc but yeah you should post a picture of her so we can how you thought this out. But yeah freaken awesome shapes and colors.
