Here's a Marlo version of an Erich Sokol! Instead of watercolor and gouache on hot press, I used acrylic, gouache and watercolor on treated linen. (I prefer oil) I also did a couple Dedini studies that are still in the Spumco archives.... maybe I'll scan those one day. (Here is the one by Sokol) By the way, well over 20 comments were erased somehow in the last two posts!!!! Please comment again please? I appreciate your comments and they really validate having a blog and show popularity to advertisers etc. thanks!

Hi Marlo,
Great study of the Sokol cartoon! I may be wrong, but I think Sokol himself favored using dilute acrylic in transparent washes rather than actual watercolour. There's certainly a distinct difference between the look of his painting style and that of Dedini, who used more real watercolour in combination with some opaque gouache for light highlights and deeper shadows (on that lovely textured watercolour paper as well.)
I've also been enjoying your brilliant recent caricatures in oil. The one of Sean Gardner as what resembles a bird's nest and eggs is pure genius! Love the one of Seo Kim, too!
woah, tahts pretty accurate- awesome study.
RAD! Casey (my boyfriend) got me an Sokol book for xmas this year. He's one of my favorites. He even emailed Kristen asking her about it before he got it for me (daww) :D
Holy crap, how did I miss this? It's an amazing study.
This looks incredible, Marlo!
brilliant; love it!! :)
Thank you Pete, Alex, Casey, Katie, Rex and greg!!! I did this a year ago, last winter. I figure I post everything! why the hell not.
Very expressive and appealing! I like the farmer tan on the girl. Amazing work!
beautiful!
Mr Sable thank you! Jon Casey thank you!
amazing Marlo. sokol is definitely one of my favourites, and I'm blown away by how spot on you are.
thank you sam!
hey marlo,
great one - good practice.
funny to find erich sokol here - that the americans know him so much. (he worked long time there) he is also austrian, and i met him some years ago and spent a fun evening talking about caricatures... great man - pity he did...
greetings,
bernd
Good color study Marlo. Sokol is one of the greatest at skin color and texture. The tan lines really sell it.
Here's a link to a GQ article for June 2010 where some guy blatantly rips off Mr. Sokol. If the GQ editors were gonna use someone who uses Mr. Sokol's style they should have gotten YOU to do the illustrations because your tribute to Mr. Sokol is a whole lot better than his. And HE got paid for it!!
